How Can I Get Childcare?

The San Luis Obispo Child Development Center is a non-profit organization providing subsidized childcare to children ages 2-5.  We are currently at capacity so there is a waiting list.

How the Enrollment Waiting List works:

Enrollment priority is given first to those who receive child protective services and second to those referred “at risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.” Remaining families are placed on a waiting list, and ranked by income and family size, according to State guidelines. (Family size is defined as all children 18 years or younger, and their parents or adoptive parents.)

Childcare hours are based on families’ eligibility and need. Eligibility refers to being income eligible, a recipient of child protective services, or homeless. Need refers to what a parent is doing during the day that necessitates childcare, such as attending school or training, working, seeking employment, or having a doctor sign a statement of incapacity.

Eligibility: In order to enroll in SLOCDC, families meet eligibility and need requirements.

Eligibility is established by one of the following categories:

  • “At Risk” or CWS Referral: family has a child who is at risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation (as identified as a legally qualified professional), or receiving child protective services through the county welfare department (receiving family maintenance or family preservation services and child requires child care/child development services as part of the case plan). Referral form required
  • Family is a public assistance recipient.
  • Family is income eligible. Below 75% of the state median income.
  • Family is homeless.
